The Stewards’ Cup was first held on 22 May 1954 over 1200m at Happy Valley. In 1991 in became a mile race and became a Hong Kong Group 1 race. It became the first leg of the Triple Crown when the series was first introduced in the 1991/92 season where the other legs are the Hong Kong Gold Cup in February and the Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup in May or June. It was upgraded to International Group 1 status in 2015.

It is held on the same day as the Group 1 Centenary Sprint Cup over 1200m.
